What is The Salvation Army?
The Salvation Army is a religious and charitable organization and is recognized as an exempt organization by the Internal Revenue Service under the provision of section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Belief in or adherence to the religious tenets of The Salvation Army are not required for consideration of employment, participation in programs or receipt of goods or services.
The Salvation Army Organization
The International Headquarters of The Salvation Army is located in London, England. This office is responsible for the supervision of The Salvation Army services throughout the world. The international leader holds the rank of General.
The United States National Headquarters is located in Alexandria, Virginia and coordinates The Salvation Army services for the entire country under the leadership of the National Commander.
For administrative purposes, The Salvation Army divides the United States into four geographic territories, each directed by a Territorial Commander, who usually holds the rank of Commissioner and is responsible to the General. Currently, Territorial Headquarters are located in West Nyack, NY (East); Des Plaines, Illinois (Central); Atlanta, Georgia (South) and Long Beach, California (West).
Territories are divided into divisions, each with its own Divisional Headquarters and its own supervisor called the Divisional Commander. Each Division is composed of corps community centers and other Salvation Army institutions. The Divisional Headquarters for Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky Services is located in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio.
The Salvation Army in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky operates under the Southwest Ohio-Northeast Kentucky Division (SWONEKY) within the Eastern Territory. The Divisional headquarters for the SWONEKY Division is in Cincinnati.
