Features Olympian Nick Goepper, The Herbert Brothers, and FREE DONUTS!
CINCINNATI (June 4, 2014) — Bakeries throughout Greater Cincinnati will mark National Donut Day on Friday, June 6, with an event on Fountain Square. Donut Day Cincinnati 2014 is presented by The Greater Cincinnati Retail Bakers Association, to benefit The Salvation Army. This year’s event will feature Olympian Nick Goepper and The Herbert Brothers, among other noted local celebrities that will join in on the fun. Following the Donut Day games, Goepper and The Herbert Brothers will be autographing photo cards for guests, while supplies last.
The family-friendly event at Fountain Square will start at 12:00 Noon, features celebrity donut games, such as donut stacking and a donut toss. Participating bakeries will serve free donuts, while supplies last, and The Salvation Army provides free beverages. For the fifth consecutive year, the event is presented by members of the Greater Cincinnati Retail Bakers Association. Sponsors of this year’s event include BakeMark, Dawn Foods and Paper Products Company. The Salvation Army in Greater Cincinnati is the beneficiary of the sponsorship funds, as well as any freewill donations made in the familiar red kettles during the event.
National Donut Day, which was established in 1938 by The Salvation Army as a depression-era outreach initiative, pays tribute to The Salvation Army volunteers who prepared donuts for thousands of soldiers during World War I. Since that time, National Donut Day events have been held in cities across the country by local Salvation Army units.
“Once again, The Salvation Army is delighted to celebrate National Donut Day through the support and coordination of the Greater Cincinnati Retail Bakers Association and key sponsors,” said Matt Pearce, Development Director for The Salvation Army. “Donut Day reflects well upon the heritage of service that marks the mission of The Salvation Army, which has been serving the local community since 1885.” Pearce added: “I extend our sincere thanks to BakeMark, Dawn Foods and Paper Products Co. for their financial contribution, and I encourage the community to go buy donuts to support all the wonderful bakeries involved.”
Bakeries participating with the National Donut Day event in Cincinnati this year include: Bonnie Lynn Bakery, Bonomini Bakery, Busken Bakery, D.J. Bakery, Dunkin Donuts, Graeter’s Bakery, Harrison Home Bakery, Holtman’s Donut Shop, Jansen’s Sweet Sinsations, Midwest Culinary Institute, North College Hill Bakery, Pink in a Blanket, Regina Bakery, Schmidt’s Bakery, Servatii Pastry Shop, and Wyoming Pastry Shop.
The event co-emcee will once again be Marilyn Harris, local radio personality and food expert, whose radio show, “Cookin’ with Marilyn,” is presented on WKRC-AM (550). She will be joined by Dennis Smith, president of Paper Products Co., whose long affiliation with the local bakers makes him an expert on the industry. Additional event support will be provided by staff and students from the "Midwest Culinary Institute" at Cincinnati State, who have been consistent supporters of and contributors to the local Donut Day festivities.
