Olympian Nick Goepper to Participate at Donut Day Event in Cincinnati

Annual Event Hosted by GCRBA Benefits The Salvation Army

CINCINNATI (May 15, 2014) — The Salvation Army announced today that Olympian Nick Goepper will join the celebration of National Donut Day to be held on June 6th on Fountain Square.  Goepper, ranked #1 in the world as a slopestyle freeskier, won the Bronze medal at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia.  Goepper began competing in the pro circuit in 2011, and quickly amassed medal after medal in competitions around the globe, earning his way to the Olympics. A native of Lawrenceburg, IN, Nick’s success has been lauded throughout the region, as a ‘hometown boy’ makes it big.

“We’re delighted that Nick has agreed to join us for Donut Day 2014,” stated Matt Pearce, Development Director at The Salvation Army.  “His energy and popularity will bring an exciting dynamic to the event. We’re eager to meet him and congratulate him on his success.”

Goepper will participate in a series of donut-based games that have been the hallmark of the Donut Day events in Cincinnati over the past few years.  Games include Donut Toss, Donut Slide, and Donut Stacking, with local celebrities participating in teams to see who will be crowned the “Grand Champion Donut Handler.”  Last year, then-mayoral-candidate John Cranley showed that a good strategy and donut-handling skill can secure the top prize. Donut Day planners like to believe that he rode the success of being crowned “Grand Champion Donut Handler” right into the Mayor’s office.

Donut Day (#nationaldonutday) is presented on the first Friday of June each year, and honors the heritage of The Salvation Army’s ministry in support of troops at the front lines starting in World War I.  In Cincinnati, Donut Day is presented by the Greater Cincinnati Retail Bakers Association (GCRBA), to benefit the work of The Salvation Army in Greater Cincinnati.  Generous event sponsors help to ensure the fundraising success of the event.  But mostly, it’s a great way to celebrate donuts, encourage support of our local bakeries, and build awareness of The Salvation Army’s multi-faceted programs that strive to positively impact the lives of those most in need in our local community.

Donut Day 2014 will be Friday, June 6th, 2014, starting at Noon on Fountain Square.  Local bakeries will highlight their special offerings and distribute free donuts to attendees.  Local celebrities will participate in several donut-themed games, with the top four players competing in the final donut stacking round to determine who will take the coveted top prize.
