The Salvation Army Inducts Local Health Care Executive Into Cincinnati Advisory Board

Dr. Derek van Amerongen Lends Leadership and Management Skills to Local Efforts

Cincinnati, OH (September 16, 2015) – The Salvation Army today announced that it inducted Dr. Derek van Amerongen, Vice President and Medical Officer for Humana Health Plans of Ohio, to the Cincinnati Advisory Board.  Like all Salvation Army Advisory Board members, Dr. van Amerongen was tasked with aiding The Salvation Army in Greater Cincinnati as it works to fulfill its mission.

Dr. Derek van Amerongen, MD, MS, oversees the medical management and strategy at Humana Health of Ohio, one of the nation’s most innovative health plans.  Before joining Humana, Dr. van Amerongen was National Medical Director for Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield.  His experience also includes over six years as Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology for the Johns Hopkins Medical Services Corporation and as a faculty member in the Dept. of Gynecology and Obstetrics of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

Dr. van Amerongen has written and presented extensively on managed care and health topics, with contributions appearing in many prominent industry publications.  He is on the faculty of Xavier University in the School of Health Administration.  He has been awarded commendations for his teaching contributions at both the Johns Hopkins Hospital and the University of Cincinnati School of Medicine, where he is an associate professor in the Dept. of Obstetrics and Gynecology.  Dr. van Amerongen received his undergraduate degree from Princeton University and his MD from Rush Medical College in Chicago.  He also earned a Masters in Science in medical administration from the University of Wisconsin.

Members of The Salvation Army Advisory Board actively participate in the organization’s operations, programs and fundraising. “We’re grateful that Dr. van Amerongen has agreed to contribute his time, talent and treasure to benefit The Salvation Army’s mission,” stated Matt Pearce, Development Director at The Salvation Army.  “The Board members are an invaluable resource in our efforts to serve the Greater Cincinnati community; we simply can’t achieve all we do without their support.”
